French President Emmanuel Macron said the country is facing its worst situation since World War II due to massive wildfires being fought by thousands of personnel, reports infohub.kz.
"We are facing a completely unprecedented fire. We are experiencing the worst situation ever recorded — the worst since World War II," Macron said in Bordeaux. In his remarks, he called for unity and warned that the coming weeks would be difficult. He also said forests must be rebuilt with climate change in mind.
Currently, 2,700 firefighters, 1,500 military personnel, 1,400 internal security forces, and 18 aircraft are involved in firefighting efforts. 88 firefighters have been injured, but no civilian casualties have been reported. 240 homes have been destroyed. The burned area has reached 115,000 hectares.
