A police officer fatally shot a man during an arrest in Madison, Wisconsin, sparking widespread protests, reports infohub.kz.
The incident occurred after officers responded to a report of a man checking parked cars. Later, they encountered him again, and a struggle ensued. According to Madison Police Chief John Patterson, during the arrest attempt, the man pulled out a fixed-blade knife and wounded one of the officers. A Taser failed to stop the attacker, after which the injured officer fired his service weapon. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
All four officers involved in the arrest have been placed on administrative leave. It also emerged that none of them were equipped with body cameras. The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is probing the circumstances.
After video footage of the incident was posted on social media, protesters took to the streets. They chanted 'No justice, no peace,' and in the evening, residents gathered at the scene to honor the deceased, bringing flowers and candles. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway expressed condolences to the victim's family and said the investigation should be 'fully transparent and accountable.'
