Two children injured in a deadly car accident on the Shetpe-Saiotes highway remain hospitalized in critical and extremely critical condition. Two others were taken home by their mother against medical advice, reports infohub.kz.
According to the regional health department, two of the four children are still receiving treatment at the Mangistau Regional Multidisciplinary Children's Hospital. The most severely injured is a girl born in 2011, diagnosed with polytrauma, severe closed head injury with diffuse axonal brain damage, intracerebral hematoma, multiple brain contusions, chest and abdominal injuries, lung and heart contusions, fractures of the collarbone and pelvic bones, as well as traumatic and hemorrhagic shock. The second hospitalized child, born in 2013, sustained a right kidney contusion and a large subcapsular hematoma. Doctors assess his condition as very critical.
The other two children were discharged home with their mother after examination. A child born in 2019 was diagnosed with closed head injury, brain concussion, bruises and abrasions to the head and face. Doctors recommended hospitalization in the trauma department, but the mother refused inpatient treatment. According to the health department, she explained her decision by the need to travel to Atyrau for the funeral of the children's father. After being warned of possible consequences, she signed a written refusal. A child born in 2021 was also released home with the mother. Medics describe his condition as stable.
The regional health department said the two hospitalized children continue to receive all necessary medical care. The transport of the girl born in 2011 was detailed on Instagram by Mereke Bekbaev, head of the anesthesiology and intensive care unit at the Mangistau Regional Multidisciplinary Children's Hospital and a top-category anesthesiologist-intensivist. He noted that at 12:20, a telemedicine consultation took place, after which it was decided to urgently airlift the girl to a specialized regional medical facility in Mangistau Region. At 13:30, the medical evacuation team departed by helicopter from the airport and landed on the grounds of the district hospital. Doctors reassessed the patient's condition, reviewed laboratory results, continued intensive therapy, and prepared her for transport.
Bekbaev reported that during the 35-minute flight, the girl's condition remained critical. All vital signs were continuously monitored by medical professionals, and intensive therapy and monitoring continued throughout the flight. After the helicopter landed, the patient was rushed to the emergency department of the Mangistau Regional Multidisciplinary Children's Hospital within one minute. According to the doctor, a long and complex treatment lies ahead for the girl.
The deadly accident occurred on the morning of July 28 on the Shetpe-Saiotes highway in Mangistau Region—the driver died, and four children were injured.
