Sanitary inspectors have completed their investigation into the mass food poisoning at the Tumar restaurant in Kandyagash, identifying staphylococcus, E. coli, and multiple violations, reports infohub.kz.
The epidemiological investigation into the mass poisoning at the Tumar restaurant in Kandyagash has been concluded. Materials have been handed over to law enforcement.
Laboratory tests detected Staphylococcus aureus among the restaurant staff, as well as coliform bacteria on kitchen equipment, in prepared food, and in a drinking water sample.
“Laboratory screenings for carrier status revealed Staphylococcus aureus in restaurant employees, who were the source of infection. Coliform bacteria were found on swabs from kitchen equipment surfaces, in food product samples, and in a drinking water sample. The affected individuals tested positive for staphylococcus and E. coli, indicating staphylococcal food toxin infection and acute intestinal infections,” said Zhanserik Kulmanov, deputy head of the Aktobe region sanitary and epidemiological control department.
During the inspection, authorities also uncovered serious sanitary violations. The restaurant prepared dishes without following proper procedures, used products lacking safety documentation, failed to carry out disinfection, and staff worked without mandatory medical checkups.
“Based on the epidemiological investigation into the mass illness, the materials have been forwarded to law enforcement under Part 1 of Article 304 of the Criminal Code of Kazakhstan,” Kulmanov added.
More than 100 people sought medical help after visiting the restaurant. Its operations have been suspended, and police have launched a pre-trial investigation. All victims have completed treatment and been discharged from hospitals.
Earlier reports indicated that after visiting the restaurant in Kandyagash, Aktobe region, 102 patients were hospitalized at the Mugalzhar district hospital and the regional clinical infectious diseases hospital with symptoms of intestinal infection. Police opened a criminal case. Later, the number of hospitalized increased, and the establishment was closed.
