In the Pavlodar Region, two women who lived in homes with the mummified bodies of deceased relatives have been ruled insane and committed to a specialized psychiatric hospital. This is reported by infohub.kz.
An elderly mother and her elder daughter were suspected of desecrating the bodies of the dead and of fraud. Investigators looked into whether they may have been collecting the pension of the deceased head of the family. According to the KTK television channel, the criminal case has been closed and the women will not stand trial.
"A criminal case was opened by police in this connection. All necessary investigative actions were carried out. Based on the results of the full set of required examinations, both women were ruled insane. Both have been committed to a specialized psychiatric hospital," the Pavlodar Region police department said.
The story of the "Maykain mummies" became known in early February. The mummified bodies of a 67-year-old pensioner and his 39-year-old younger daughter were found in two private homes belonging to the same family.
According to KTK, the man's remains had been in a room for nearly six months. His daughter's body was found in the second house, where her six-year-old daughter, grandmother and aunt lived. According to the television channel, judging by the plaques on the graves, the woman died roughly two years before the body was discovered. During her lifetime she suffered from a serious illness.
According to local residents, the girl cared for her mother's body, coating it with honey and fat. The child did not attend kindergarten — she was taught to read and write by her grandmother and aunt.
After the bodies were discovered, the deceased were buried. The girl was placed in the care of another family.
