Buying a used car can lead to unexpected expenses if you don't know which models to steer clear of. American expert Greg Damon, a mechanic with years of experience, has compiled a list of five cars that, in his opinion, can turn apparent savings into serious repair costs, reports infohub.kz.
Damon, who inspects and repairs vehicles on a weekly basis, warns that some models leave owners with hefty bills. In an interview with GoBankingRates, he shared his experience and named specific makes and models that cause the most trouble.
First on the anti-recommendation list is the BMW X5. According to the specialist, the main issue with European premium cars is the complexity and high cost of repairs after the warranty expires. The X5 often suffers from oil leaks, air suspension malfunctions, and electronic glitches.
Next is the Nissan Altima, particularly models from 2013 to 2015. Damon advises avoiding them due to problems with the CVT transmission and engine. CVT failures can occur as early as 100,000 kilometers, and repairing such a transmission is not cheap.
Third on the list is the Hyundai Kona, with special caution advised for 2018 and 2021 models. Owners have reported engine knocking, sudden stalls, and severe breakdowns that in some cases required complete engine replacement.
The Chevrolet Cruze, especially early models, also made the list. Mechanics note coolant leaks, water pump failures, and issues with the electrical system and transmission.
Rounding out the top five is the Range Rover. In addition to expensive maintenance, there are problems with the suspension, engine, and electronics. The air suspension can be particularly costly.
It's important to note that this list is just one American mechanic's opinion, not a ranking of all used cars by reliability. However, before purchasing any of these models, the expert advises thoroughly checking the vehicle's technical condition and service history.
