Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has categorically rejected the possibility of running for federal president, calling the idea absurd. She made the statement at the launch of her memoirs in Bucharest, reports infohub.kz.
Asked whether she had been offered the role of next president, Merkel said: "As for the office of federal president... It's absurd. I don't want to do it. I was in politics for 30 years, 16 of them as federal chancellor. I enjoyed it very much, although the work was very hard, very demanding. I liked it, but now I am very happy to be able to do something else in life."
According to Romania's Agerpres news agency, Merkel had previously topped the list of potential candidates for the German presidency in light of the upcoming elections, as indicated by opinion polls. The election of the next German president is scheduled for January 30, 2027.
