Meta plans to unveil a new model of smart glasses without a built-in camera, a device codenamed Luna, as early as this fall, according to infohub.kz.
ChannelNews reports that the decision to release a camera-free gadget stems from growing public discontent and regulatory criticism. The move follows incidents of unauthorized video recording using earlier versions of the glasses. The new product is expected to be presented at the Connect conference in late September, with sales starting in October.
The device, codenamed Luna, focuses on audio features and artificial intelligence integration. The glasses will be equipped with six microphones, speakers, and a dedicated button to quickly summon the Meta AI voice assistant. The absence of a camera will allow for a thinner and lighter frame—the gadget will look indistinguishable from regular glasses.
Previous versions of Meta's smart glasses have repeatedly been at the center of scandals: users found ways to cover or break the LED recording indicator to secretly film people in public places. The release of a camera-free version will give the company an opportunity to attract privacy-conscious buyers and circumvent bans on recording devices in establishments.
