Meta is developing a new model of smart glasses that does away with built-in cameras. The device carries the internal codename Luna. The product is conceived as a more affordable alternative to the Ray-Ban Meta line, which continues to draw criticism from users and privacy advocates who accuse the brand of creating gadgets for covert recording, according to infohub.kz.
The new headset will focus entirely on audio features and interaction with the Meta AI voice assistant and the Muse virtual agent. According to sources, the device will feature six microphones, speakers that direct sound toward the ears, and a dedicated side button for quickly summoning the artificial intelligence.
The glasses are planned for release in classic Clubmaster and Burbank frame styles.
Dropping the video camera was a response to scandals surrounding smart glasses that capture video. Despite a LED recording indicator on the Ray-Ban line, users found ways to block the light and record people in public places unnoticed.
The launch of the camera-free Luna glasses is meant to resolve the privacy problem by offering buyers only the functions of a smart audio navigator and assistant. An official presentation of the device is expected at the annual Meta Connect conference.
