Mexico and Peru have restored diplomatic relations after a dispute over political asylum. This was reported by infohub.kz.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá told local media outlet RPP that former Prime Minister Betsy Chávez had been granted safe passage and had left the country. The Peruvian Foreign Ministry added in a statement that while Chávez was allowed to travel to Mexico, Peru maintains the right to request her eventual extradition.
During her daily briefing, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum welcomed Chávez to Mexico and reiterated her government's support for ousted President Pedro Castillo. Castillo was arrested in December 2022 on charges of rebellion after he attempted to dissolve parliament and install an emergency government. Hours after the attempt, he was impeached.
Chávez had been imprisoned in June 2023 over her alleged role in Castillo's plan to dissolve parliament. She was released on bail in September 2025 and denied the charges. Last November, she and Castillo were both sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
The restoration of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Peru coincides with the inauguration of new Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori last week.
