American millionaire Brian Johnson, known for his fight against aging, has explained why he hasn't slept with his girlfriend Kate Tolo for nearly four years. He believes that sleeping separately helps maintain health and slow down aging, reports infohub.kz.
According to the New York Post, Johnson and Tolo sleep separately and even live in different houses. The biohacker says this arrangement allows them not to disturb each other during sleep.
He believes that sleeping next to a partner can be more frequently interrupted by the other person's movements and awakenings. Poor sleep, in Johnson's view, can accelerate biological aging. As evidence, he cited a 2020 study involving 55 couples, which found that partners could wake up about six times a night because of each other.
However, Johnson acknowledges that scientific data on co-sleeping is mixed. Another study of couples showed that sharing a bed might actually synchronize partners' sleep phases. The seasoned biohacker himself prefers not to share his bed with anyone.
This arrangement is called "sleep divorce." It doesn't necessarily indicate relationship problems. Couples may sleep in separate rooms due to different schedules, snoring, restless sleep, or simply a desire to get better rest.
According to the biohacker, there is no universal rule.
"For some couples, co-sleeping improves sleep. For others, separate beds might save sleep or the relationship. Possibly both," Johnson said.
Meanwhile, a survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that 35% of Americans sometimes sleep apart from their partner.
Recall that in July, Johnson announced he had been diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis. The disease had been asymptomatic for a long time, with the only sign being persistently low iron levels in the blood.
