India's financial capital is witnessing its largest crackdown on eateries in years. Authorities in Mumbai have launched stringent raids on popular restaurants, cafes, and bakeries. Inspections uncovered rats, flies, expired ingredients, dirty floors, and piles of unwashed dishes at iconic establishments... reports infohub.kz.
Inspectors from Mumbai's health department have temporarily shut down dozens of the city's iconic eateries due to rats and filth, according to The Straits Times.
The raids were led by Tukaram Mundhe, head of the Maharashtra state Food and Drug Administration. In July alone, his department inspected nearly 900 establishments and suspended over 100 licenses. Sanctions hit both the oldest bakeries and canteens in elite sports clubs.
Mumbai residents have supported the strict measures, but restaurant associations have already lodged a complaint with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Business owners are unhappy about the sudden closures without a chance to fix the issues. Experts note that the regulator is severely understaffed: fewer than 400 inspectors serve the entire state, against a required 2,000.
