A trial has begun in the Kostanay region over the death of a 15-year-old boy and the injury of his mother. According to investigators, the teenager intervened in a family conflict to defend the woman, as reported by infohub.kz.

On April 25, a domestic dispute occurred in Zhitikara, during which a 37-year-old woman was stabbed and her son died at the scene. Police quickly arrested the victim's husband. The defendant is Yevgeny Kanilin, a local resident charged with attempted murder of the woman and murder of a known minor.

According to case files, the tragedy unfolded in the family's apartment. Prior to the incident, the couple had been drinking with a relative. After the guest left, a quarrel broke out between the husband and wife.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed his wife in the abdomen. Hearing his mother's screams, the 15-year-old son ran into the room and tried to stop the man. "Kanilin, realizing that he was facing a minor, struck him four times with the knife blade," said state prosecutor Gulmira Kenzhetayeva.

The teenager died at the scene from his wounds. According to investigators, the man then continued attacking his wife in the bedroom. He was stopped and disarmed by the woman's relative, who returned to the apartment upon hearing his sister's cries.

A forensic psychiatric examination showed that the defendant does not suffer from mental illness and was able to understand and control his actions at the time of the crime. The state prosecutor asked the court to find Yevgeny Kanilin guilty and sentence him to 22 years in a medium-security correctional facility.

The victim and the representative of the deceased's relatives insist on a life sentence. The defendant fully confessed and repented: "I caused great pain to my family and loved ones. I didn't want things to turn out this way. Forgive me."

The verdict is expected to be announced in the coming days.
