Hall of Famer Don Nelson, one of the most innovative coaches in NBA history, has died at the age of 86. The Golden State Warriors announced the news on social media platform X, as reported by infohub.kz.
"Nellie was one of the most innovative and influential coaches in NBA history and an iconic figure in Warriors history. He was a true basketball visionary who saw the game differently and never feared challenging conventional wisdom. His approach helped change basketball and paved the way for future generations of players and coaches. On behalf of the entire organization, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Joy, his family, and countless friends," the team said in a statement.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also expressed condolences. "Don Nelson revolutionized basketball with his boldness, inventiveness, and deep convictions. He devoted nearly 50 years to the NBA, first winning five championships as a player with the Boston Celtics, and then building one of the most successful and innovative coaching careers in league history," Silver said.
According to the NBA, Nelson ranks second all-time in coaching wins. He is one of only two coaches in NBA history to have at least 250 wins with three different teams. Nelson was named Coach of the Year three times.
