A Nepali worker, Sanjay Sah, spent ten days in complete darkness inside a flooded hydropower tunnel and survived, reports infohub.kz.
The emergency occurred at a hydropower construction site in Nepal when sudden flooding cut off the tunnel exit. Throughout that time, the man was trapped in an enclosed space without light, lost track of time, and drank muddy water until rescuers from the disaster response service broke through to him.
The first thing Sanjay Sah asked after being evacuated to the surface was what the date was. That question clearly showed how complete his isolation from the outside world had been.
The rescue operation demanded extreme precision from the specialists: pumping out water and clearing debris were constantly complicated by the risk of further collapses inside the tunnel structure.
The victim is currently under medical observation, and doctors assess his condition as stable. The worker expressed deep gratitude to the rescuers and called his successful extraction from the flooded facility a "second birth."
The country's authorities have launched an inspection of safety compliance at the hydropower facility.
