Streaming giant Netflix has decided not to proceed with the development of an English-language spin-off of the hit South Korean series "Squid Game," which was to be directed by David Fincher. The project, known under the working title "Heckler," has been shelved before filming began, according to infohub.kz.
According to The Playlist, the project is no longer in development. Initially, it was planned as an English-language offshoot of "Squid Game." The script was being written by Dennis Kelly, creator of the British series "Utopia," with Fincher set to direct.
A source for the publication claims that during the development period, Netflix's plans changed drastically. Whereas previously the streaming service intended to expand the franchise through an American series, the company is now considering creating separate local versions for different countries. However, no specific projects have been announced yet.
An additional reason for the project's cancellation is that Fincher himself has shifted focus to other work. The director is currently working on the film "The Adventures of Cliff Booth," a continuation of Brad Pitt's character from "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."
Rumors about the spin-off intensified after the finale of "Squid Game," where Kate Blanchett unexpectedly appeared as an American recruiter. Many viewers took this as a hint at Fincher's upcoming series.
Earlier, insiders reported that the series would be titled "Squid Game: America," with filming scheduled to begin on February 26, 2026, in Los Angeles. Blanchett was the only confirmed actress at the time. However, after initial reports about the project, Netflix went silent.
