Scientists have uncovered the neural mechanisms that allow the brain to make decisions when faced with multiple conflicting tasks, reports infohub.kz.

The researchers studied how the human central nervous system allocates resources and sets priorities during decision-making. In situations where an individual faces competing goals, the brain activates specialized neural networks to evaluate the potential benefits and required effort of each option.

During the experiment, scientists tracked activity in specific areas of the cerebral cortex as tasks changed. They found that the prefrontal cortex plays a key role in suppressing less important impulses and shifting attention to the most prioritized goal. The reward system dynamically adjusts signals, allowing a person to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

The findings shed light on the basic cognitive processes responsible for self-control and behavioral strategy selection. The authors note that understanding these mechanisms could help develop new approaches to treating disorders related to impaired decision-making and impulsive behavior.
