A boat capsized in New York Harbor on Saturday evening, resulting in the deaths of a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl. The vessel's captain has been charged in connection with the incident, as reported by infohub.kz.
According to a New York Police Department spokesperson who spoke to The Guardian, 46-year-old Manuel Hernandez was arrested and charged with 13 counts of reckless endangerment on Sunday morning.
Police received a 911 call at 10:25 PM, prompting a helicopter response. Divers subsequently recovered the woman and infant from the water. They were transported in critical condition to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where they were pronounced dead.
The NYPD stated: "On Saturday, August 8, 2026, at approximately 2225 hours, police received a 911 call reporting an overturned vessel in the vicinity of Liberty Island. The NYPD's Harbor Unit, SCUBA Team, and Aviation responded to the scene."
A dozen other people were rescued from the vessel before police arrived and were later taken to hospitals. The names of the victims have not been released.
