When a calf muscle cramps in the middle of the night, we instinctively make a movement that only locks the spasm. Physiotherapist Vladimir Karasenko explained why the usual reaction doesn't work and how to properly stretch the leg to ease the pain... reports the website infohub.kz.
"If your calf cramps at night, don't point your toes away from you, even though that's often what you automatically want to do. Try the opposite: gently pull your foot and toes toward you while straightening your knee," the doctor shares.
According to him, during a typical night cramp, the calf muscle contracts sharply and involuntarily. When you point your toes away, the muscle stays in a shortened position. But moving the foot toward you gently stretches the calf muscle and can help the spasm release faster. You can also stand up and carefully shift your weight onto that leg.
When to see a doctor
"And another important point: if cramps become frequent, especially if other symptoms appear—swelling, weakness, numbness, or severe pain—I wouldn't just say 'take magnesium,' but would definitely see a specialist for help," says Karasenko.
The doctor emphasized that recurring cramps can have various causes, and it would be good to understand why they occur in the first place.
What the doctor warned about earlier
Previously, Karasenko noted that age is not always the cause of joint and muscle pain. According to him, people often bring ailments upon themselves. He also explained why pills and massage alone won't solve the problem.
The specialist also explained why the whole body sometimes jerks suddenly before sleep.
