Lawyer Ayanhan Omarov announced the date of the first court hearing in the murder case of Nurai Serikbay in Shymkent, reports the website infohub.kz.
The preliminary hearing will take place on July 21 at 10:00 a.m. in the specialized inter-district criminal court of Shymkent, the lawyer said. During the hearing, the court will decide whether to schedule the case for trial on its merits, determine the order of evidence examination, and consider the possibility of a jury trial.
The crime was captured on video on the evening of January 11 in Shymkent at a crosswalk on the intersection of Tolemetova and Utegenov streets. The footage shows the young woman trying to run away and then resisting as a man beats her and stabs her before fleeing. Police opened a criminal case, and a person known to the victim became a suspect. The suspect was detained in an open area 10 kilometers from Shymkent. Relatives of the victim said he was a stalker. In April, he was sent to a specialized institution for compulsory treatment, but a forensic examination found him sane. At the end of May, he was transferred back to Shymkent from a medical center in Talgar. A month ago, it was reported that the investigation into the case had been completed.
