Three children and a teacher were killed in a shooting at an elementary school in the U.S. state of Oregon, and two others were seriously wounded, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to CBS, citing local authorities, the tragedy occurred in the city of Bend. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children who died were 5, 8 and 11 years old, and a teacher was also killed. Among the injured were a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher, who were taken to a medical center with serious injuries.
Emergency dispatchers had received dozens of calls that an armed person had entered the school. The attacker reportedly got into the building by shooting at locked doors. Police arrived at the scene three minutes after the first call — the man who called was in a car near the school. According to available information, the suspect fired several shots in his direction.
By the time officers arrived, the suspect had been killed by a witness to the tragedy, the city's police chief said. "One of the officers reported that the suspect was shot by a local resident who saw him enter the school, followed him inside and confronted him," Krantz said.
Details about the witness who shot the attacker are not being released. It is not yet known whether the suspect had any connection to the school.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised the actions of the witness, who "heroically intervened to prevent further loss of life." "Today all Oregonians mourn this loss. This is a terrible day. No parent should have to go through this. And no community should have to go through this," she said.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency's local field office is assisting Oregon police in the investigation.
