Researchers at Yale University have found that the popular weight-loss drug Ozempic acts on the brain differently than previously thought, according to infohub.kz.

The scientists discovered that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, does not suppress but rather activates AgRP neurons, which are responsible for the feeling of hunger. Earlier it was assumed that these drugs work by suppressing these neurons.

In experiments on mice, it was established that during treatment with semaglutide, calorie deficit causes the brain to activate hunger neurons. At the same time, these same neurons help the body maintain the process of fat burning.

Lead author of the study, d'Avila, noted that cells previously considered an obstacle to weight loss actually play an important role in maintaining the results of therapy. The results of the work were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The discovery could help in the development of more effective and safer anti-obesity drugs. However, further research on humans is needed to confirm the findings.
