An explosion ripped through a roadside police checkpoint in the Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan, killing at least 12 people and wounding 30 others, local police said. The incident is being treated as a possible terrorist attack, according to infohub.kz.
Police chief Safdar Baloch said most of the dead and injured were security personnel, including officers, customs officials and forest department staff. Two of the dead were passersby.
According to a preliminary assessment, a vehicle packed with explosives rammed the checkpoint. Witnesses said gunshots were heard before the blast.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the suspected attack, but suspicion has fallen on the Pakistani Taliban, known by the acronym TTP (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan).
