"The inhospitable terrain should make military planners think twice about an invasion," says an analysis by the US Naval Institute.
The study's authors describe Iran as a "natural fortress." They argue that mountainous terrain, deserts, and wear on military equipment could make achieving objectives "almost impossible," and rate the prospects of a ground operation as "no chance."
The publication also provides data on the size of Iran's armed forces. Under the country's command are about 610,000 active military personnel and paramilitary fighters, along with approximately 350,000 reservists.
Against the backdrop of these assessments, the attitude of American society toward a potential operation is also noted. "Only a third of US citizens approve of a military operation," according to an Ipsos poll for Reuters. Additionally, 69% of respondents believe Donald Trump has not clearly explained the goals of possible military intervention.
