Paramount Pictures will adapt the hit video game Cyberpunk 2077 into a feature film, the website infohub.kz reports. The studio has been actively courting game franchises lately, and now one of the most famous games of recent years is getting its turn.
The film will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, best known for his work on the Transformers franchise. Polish studio CD Projekt Red, which created the original game and holds the rights to it, is also joining the project.
Details about the film remain scarce so far. The creators have not announced a director, a cast or a release date. It is also unclear whether the movie will retell the game's plot or tell a new story set in the same universe.
Cyberpunk 2077 itself was released in 2020 and transports players to Night City, a fictional metropolis in a future California where giant corporations control people's lives and technology allows the human body to be modified.
The game's protagonist is V, a mercenary who ends up with a biochip in his head carrying the consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rock musician and terrorist. Keanu Reeves provided the character's appearance and voice, so the actor will most likely play him in the feature film as well. Gradually Johnny's consciousness begins to displace V's personality, and the characters must find a way to separate before the mercenary loses control of his own body.
Since its release, the game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Its expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, has sold more than 15 million copies.
Earlier, Kursiv LifeStyle reported that FX revealed the main cast of its series based on the Far Cry game franchise.
