Parents in Uralsk are outraged by school hairstyle requirements: teachers sent out memos listing acceptable hairstyles, sparking a strong reaction. According to the document, girls are allowed only three hairstyles—high ponytail, braid, or bun—while boys have just one option. Parents consider these rules overly strict, reports infohub.kz.
One mother, Aliya, expressed her indignation in a school chat: "They sent us a memo in the school chat about what hairstyle children should have. I'm outraged! Are we in North Korea?! Who gave the school the right to choose a hairstyle? The uniform is clear, and I have nothing against it, but I categorically disagree with the hairstyle rule. First, it's a way of self-expression (I'm not talking about color, let them forbid dyeing), teachers, of all people, should know that teenagers need this. Second, there's an aesthetic aspect. What about those with protruding ears? I suffered from that myself and covered my ears with hair as much as I could. Third, not all parents have the opportunity to get their children ready for school; many students leave on their own. How is a girl supposed to put her hair in a bun or braid it?"
The memo also bans accessories, makeup, painted nails, and dyed hair. The regional education department explained that the hairstyles shown in the memos are just examples.
