A 62-year-old man has been sentenced in Pavlodar for a heinous crime committed 14 years ago. The case was solved thanks to DNA analysis, reports infohub.kz.
According to case materials, the trial was held behind closed doors. Details of the brutal murder of an elderly woman in a garden community on the city's outskirts have not been disclosed. It was established that the convict raped the victim before killing her to cover up the crime. For years, the man went unpunished, but modern forensic methods led to his capture. Biological material found at the crime scene played a key role, and the suspect was identified through a DNA database.
The arrested man immediately confessed. Notably, he spent most of the time after the crime in prison: over 14 years, he was convicted three times for serious offenses. Three years ago, he was again sent to a colony for murder and theft.
The court took into account the mitigating circumstance of the defendant's advanced age, but the aggravating factor was that the crimes were committed while intoxicated. "The defendant's guilt in this criminal case has been proven by the victim's testimony, witnesses, and expert conclusions. By partially summing the imposed sentences, the final punishment of 20 years in prison has been assigned," said Judge Zhanna Nygybayeva.
