Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted an image on X of a so-called "new version" of the European Union flag: alongside the 12 gold stars, it features a red maple leaf symbolizing Canada. With this move, the Spanish prime minister hinted that Canada has been offered to become the EU's first associated member, according to infohub.kz.
Sánchez added no text comments to the post.
Recall that the day before, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed that Canada become the first associated member of the European Union.
After that, US President Donald Trump said the United States could stop trading with the European Union if the EU's partnership with Canada threatens the United States.
In late August, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would impose retaliatory tariffs against the US on a "dollar-for-dollar" basis.
In response, Donald Trump called Canada's policy a failure and the country's leadership, including Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, incompetent.
