A pet goose in Texas has been credited with saving a family's animals from a barn fire by honking loudly to alert them. The incident occurred on August 4 in Fort Bend County. Four-month-old Goosey repeatedly squawked outside the burning barn, alerting the Gerber family to the danger.
Home security footage shows Goosey emerging from the barn and squawking repeatedly, pacing back and forth for several seconds. The commotion woke Bert Gerber, who saw flames billowing from the barn. He grabbed a water hose and extinguished the blaze, and all the animals inside were safe.
Bert said that if Goosey hadn't come to the rescue, a few more minutes of sleep could have led to the fire being out of control. He said, "Our goose, Goosey, alerted us by honking, waking us up. We were fortunate to get all the flames out, and everyone is safe."
Chelsea Gerber said the family was in "pure disbelief" and felt "extremely grateful" to their bird. Goosey joined the family on Mother's Day this year after their daughter fell in love with him at a poultry expo. Chelsea, who is historically terrified of geese, reluctantly agreed to bring him home. Four months later, that decision saved their homestead.
