In the U.S., a petition has been launched against the participation of New York City's first Muslim mayor in ceremonies marking the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, reports infohub.kz.
Families of 9/11 victims have gathered nearly 17,000 signatures on a petition urging Mayor Zohran Mamdani to refrain from taking part in events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
The petition criticizes Mamdani for failing to condemn the slogan "Globalize the Intifada," which in the U.S. is seen as a call for violence against Jews. It also cites the mayor's past associations with individuals some Americans consider extremists.
When asked whether he would attend events remembering the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Mamdani said: "I will proudly pay tribute to the families, survivors, first responders forever scarred by that horrific terrorist attack, standing alongside them at the 9/11 memorial ceremony this year — affirming that we will never forget that mournful day experienced by all of us who call this city home, and truthfully, all of us who call this country home."
Recall that earlier, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election, becoming the first Muslim mayor in the city's history.
