Pope Leo XIV has undergone lung surgery after being diagnosed with cancer. The pontiff had part of his right lung removed, according to infohub.kz.

The Holy See press office released a statement from Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora about the operation. According to them, surgeons removed the lower lobe of the pontiff's right lung.

"To ensure radical removal of the affected tissue, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using video-assisted surgical techniques," the statement said.

It also noted that tissue examination confirmed the diagnosis that doctors had suspected based on preliminary tests.

"The histological examination performed during surgery confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, as had been suspected from preoperative tests," the doctors said.

The operation lasted 90 minutes, while the pope himself was in the operating room for about three hours.

According to the doctors, the surgery was successful with no complications — the head of the Catholic Church regained consciousness and later returned to his room.

Earlier it was reported that the pope was preparing for lung surgery.
