Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Lisbon and other Portuguese cities again, demanding more affordable housing and lower rents and protesting the government's housing measures, the website infohub.kz reports.
The rallies were held on Tuesday evening, several hours after police broke up tent camps and detained 55 people. In Lisbon, demonstrators gathered in Rossio Square and decided to rebuild the camp. In Porto, protesters also returned to the streets and then headed to city hall.
Protesters oppose government plans to ease restrictions on annual rent increases and to make it easier to evict tenants who fail to pay. Demonstrators call these measures "inhumane."
Social media is circulating footage of marches involving thousands of people in Lisbon, Porto and other cities: the housing crisis has made renting and buying homes unaffordable for many citizens. Police dismantled the tent camps and detained 55 people, but demonstrators returned to the streets several hours later and vow to keep up their actions.
Protesters are calling for a general strike on November 11, 2026.
In Porto, demonstrators decided not to gather until Saturday, October 24. Large-scale demonstrations in various Portuguese cities are planned for that day.
Meanwhile, courts are hearing the cases of the 55 protesters detained in Lisbon. The actions across the country are now in their second week.
