Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov has signed a decree approving an investment agreement for the construction of a 700 MW power plant in Kurchatov. The total cost of the project is 881 billion tenge, reports infohub.kz.
The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and GRES Kurchatov LLP. The new condensing power plant will be located in the city of Kurchatov, Abai Region.
According to the document, the two power units, each with a capacity of 350 MW, are planned to be commissioned in stages by 2032. Once operational, the plant will be able to generate up to 5 billion kWh of electricity per year. The project is expected to create about 4,400 jobs.
"The plant will be equipped with modern steam turbine equipment designed to operate at elevated pressure and temperature parameters, utilizing clean coal technologies," the government statement said.
To reduce environmental impact, the project includes gas cleaning, emission filtration, and dust suppression systems in accordance with the Environmental Code and best available techniques requirements.
