In the Italian Alps, the summer ski season at the Stelvio glacier has ended prematurely due to abnormal heat. The resort was forced to stop operations because extreme temperatures made the slopes dangerous for visitors, reports infohub.kz.

According to Bild, it is so hot on the glacier during the day that it doesn't have time to freeze and recover overnight. The organizers decided not to take risks, as in such conditions the ski slopes become a threat to life and health.

The Stelvio glacier was the last ski resort in Europe operating during the summer period. Usually, one could ski here even in the warm season.

The current heatwave is record-breaking for Europe in the entire history of meteorological observations. Due to drought, the Rhine River has critically shrunk, France has recorded 50 hottest days in history, and Switzerland has banned watering lawns and closed pools due to water shortages. According to experts, the losses for France alone from such weather could reach 15 billion euros (approximately 8.04 trillion tenge).

Earlier, Kursiv reported that the death toll from abnormal heat in Europe in 2026 exceeded 25,000 people. Due to continuous waves of extremely high temperatures, the actual excess mortality rates may be even higher, as official statistics are delayed.
