RFID Tags on Kazakhstan's Toll Roads: How to Save on Travel

Kazakh drivers can now install RFID tags on their vehicles to pass through toll plazas quickly and save money. The new payment method for toll road sections, introduced by KazAvtoZhol, is reported by infohub.kz.

The special RFID tags automatically trigger when passing through a toll plaza. According to KazAvtoZhol, the tag is linked to the vehicle's state registration number and the user's account in the KazToll service. When passing through, the system identifies the vehicle and automatically deducts the fare from the balance. The driver simply needs to keep sufficient funds in their account — the system handles the rest. This allows toll plazas to be passed much faster than usual.

However, drivers with an RFID tag can save not only time but also money.

The reason is that toll roads in Kazakhstan offer two payment options:

prepayment — funds are deducted when passing through the toll plaza. This is how payment is made with an RFID tag, which speeds up the process;

postpayment — the driver pays the fare independently after passing through the toll plaza.

With prepayment, the cost of travel is usually lower. For example, on the Shchuchinsk — Kokshetau toll section, a passenger car pays about 117.21 tenge with prepayment and 140.56 tenge with postpayment. From Almaty to the city of Qonaev, prepayment costs 152 tenge, while postpayment costs 176 tenge.

The difference may seem small at first glance, but for drivers, especially truck drivers who regularly travel on toll roads, it becomes significant.

Important: the RFID tag itself does not provide a discount, but it allows you to pay less because payment is made at the moment of passing through the toll plaza — the key is to have the required amount in your account. Note that prepayment is also available without a tag. If the driver's account has funds, the amount will be deducted automatically. The tag only speeds up the process. It can be obtained free of charge at toll plazas.
