Nearly 40% of all deposits in Kazakhstani banks belong to residents of Almaty, who have accumulated about 9.6 trillion tenge, reports infohub.kz.
Recently, household deposits in Kazakhstani banks hit a record, surpassing 30 trillion tenge for the first time. However, as the Finprom portal notes, excluding non-resident accounts and money on cards, the amount is slightly more modest at 24.9 trillion tenge.
The total is unevenly distributed across regions. Nearly 40% of deposit funds, or about 9.6 trillion tenge, is held by depositors in Almaty. Astana follows with 3.2 trillion, and Karaganda Region ranks third with 1.4 trillion. The top five also includes West Kazakhstan Region (1.2 trillion) and Shymkent (1.1 trillion tenge).
Residents of Zhetysu (303.9 billion), Almaty Region (232.4 billion), and Ulytau (168.2 billion tenge) hold the least in deposits.
When comparing total savings to regional populations, on average each Almaty resident has nearly 4.1 million tenge. For comparison, the national average is only 1.2 million. In Astana, it's 1.9 million per person, and in Shymkent – 803,900 tenge. The lowest figure is in Almaty Region – just 144,100 tenge per person on average.
Thus, the gap between deposit leaders and outsiders exceeds 25-fold, which analysts say reflects significant differentiation in household savings levels across Kazakhstan's regions.
Meanwhile, it's worth recalling that earlier some second-tier banks reduced interest rates on their deposit products.
