The medicine of the future is becoming a reality: at the Almaty Oncology Center, a stomach operation was performed with the help of a robot for the first time in the country. Part of the organ was removed through tiny punctures — without frightening incisions, reports infohub.kz.
During the procedure, doctors used an ICG navigation system, which works like a kind of "highlighting" and allows the surgeon to see all tissues and vessels as clearly as possible. In addition, according to treatment standards, the patient immediately had the affected and adjacent lymph nodes removed (D2 lymph node dissection) to prevent further spread of the disease.
As explained by Nurlan Baltayev, head of the oncological surgery department at the Almaty Oncology Center, the robotic system helps the surgeon perform the operation with high precision.
"We see the surgical field in an enlarged three-dimensional image, can examine anatomical structures in detail and perform complex manipulations in hard-to-reach areas. At the same time, the system filters out the natural micro-tremor of the surgeon's hands," he said.
The main advantage of robot-assisted surgery for the patient is the absence of large and painful stitches. The most complex manipulations are performed through several neat punctures, which minimizes tissue trauma and helps the person recover faster.
For the Almaty Oncology Center, this is already the 15th such operation. Previously, with the help of smart technology, local specialists successfully removed tumors of the intestine, kidneys, prostate and uterus.
According to the Ministry of Health, more than 3,000 operations are performed at the center annually, 60% of them using minimally invasive methods.
