Russian professor and trauma surgeon-orthopedist Maksim Vavilov has arrived in Karaganda to perform complex surgeries on children with foot deformities. Over two days, Kazakh and Russian specialists will operate on seven children aged 6 to 16, infohub.kz reports.

The Russian doctor is visiting Karaganda for the second time. He speaks highly of the professionalism of local pediatric orthopedists, but notes that local doctors still need to gain experience in the surgical treatment of the most severe and atypical foot deformities.

According to him, there are children with congenital anomalies and nervous system disorders that do not fit standard treatment protocols.

"It is precisely in treating such complex cases that I want to share my experience," the orthopedist said.

Over these two days, the doctors will change the lives of seven children. Their diagnoses are very challenging: from severe congenital clubfoot and severe foot dislocation to rare genetic diseases and the consequences of neurological conditions.

One of the patients is a 12-year-old boy from Saran with severe bilateral clubfoot. The situation was complicated by the fact that the child has serious accompanying diagnoses — microcephaly and epilepsy. Because of this combination, standard surgical treatment methods were not suitable for him.

The boy's mother, Lyubov Velichko, said they had waited a very long time for such an opportunity, as they had previously been turned down everywhere.

"Because of the diagnosis, they were afraid to take on such a case. When we were offered to take part in the master class, we agreed immediately. Right now they are operating on one leg. Once we get through that and rehabilitation, we'll try the second one. I want him to be able to walk on his own," the mother says.

Earlier, Kursiv reported that Kazakh surgeons gave master classes to doctors in Kyrgyzstan.
