Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has alleged that his detention conditions are inhumane, according to infohub.kz.
The politician made the statement on his Facebook page. He claims he is held in a small, dark cell without ventilation, where unsanitary conditions prevail. Saakashvili also notes that other political prisoners are held in similar conditions.
The former Georgian president drew a parallel with the writer Miguel de Cervantes. "On October 1, it will be five years since my imprisonment—exactly as long as Cervantes was held captive. Such prolonged solitary confinement, by international standards, amounts to torture and inhuman treatment," he said.
Recall that Mikheil Saakashvili was detained in Georgia in October 2021 after returning from Ukraine. Since then, he has repeatedly declared hunger strikes but later ended them. Five criminal cases have been opened against the former president, with sentences handed down. In March 2025, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for embezzlement of state funds, known as the "jacket case." A week later, a court added 4.5 years for illegally crossing the border. Additionally, Saakashvili lost a case at the European Court of Human Rights.
It is noted that during his imprisonment, Saakashvili spent three years in the hospital.
