Sand dunes have unexpectedly appeared on a new highway in Kazakhstan's Atyrau Region, with witnesses filming the unusual obstacle, and regional authorities now weighing how to combat the drifting sand, the website infohub.kz reports.
The unusual phenomenon was recorded on the road between the villages of Miyaly and Taisoigan in the Kyzylkoga District, where a new highway is under construction.
The project is currently in its final stage, with acceptance procedures and handover from the contractor to the road administration underway.
The road between the villages runs through the territory of the Taisoigan Sands.
Officials responded to the video of the dunes on the road, saying the roadway is being cleared of sand as needed.
However, they are still working out how to prevent sand from accumulating on the highway in the first place.
"Together with the akimat of the Kyzylkoga District, additional measures are being considered to minimize the effects of sand drifts, including adjusting certain elements of the road infrastructure to allow sand to move more freely and prevent it from piling up on the roadway," the regional department of passenger transport and highways said.
