Kazakh sabre fencer Artyom Sarkisyan has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asian Games in Japan, leaving him one bout away from the podium. In the preliminary rounds, Sarkisyan won four of five bouts, and in the round of 16 he defeated India's Gisho Nidhi Kumaresan Padma 15-11, according to infohub.kz.

The day unfolded differently for Kazakhstan's top women's foil fencer, Sofia Aktayeva: she won three of five bouts in the group stage but lost in the round of 16 to Hong Kong's Nok Ze Daphne Chan 11-15. Her teammate Alina Gnoyeva lost at the same stage to four-time Asian champion Yuka Ueno of Japan 3-15. Gnoyeva had navigated the preliminary rounds (2-3) and defeated India's Joyce Ashita Stalinraj in the first playoff round 15-14.

Kazakh sabre fencer Nurmukhamed Zhailybay completed his campaign after the group stage, losing four of five bouts. Earlier, epee fencers Irina Bakaldina and Vladislava Andreeva fell in the quarterfinals, finishing just short of the medals.

In Asian Games fencing competitions, Kazakhstan has won three gold, four silver, and 13 bronze medals. The men's epee team claimed the title twice (1994, 2002), as did Dmitry Alexanin in the same weapon at the 2018 Asian Games.

The official opening ceremony of the 20th Summer Asian Games took place on September 19. The multi-sport event, featuring athletes from 45 countries, will award 460 sets of medals: 217 in men's events, 204 in women's events, and 39 in mixed events. Kazakhstan's team at the 2026 Asian Games comprises 558 athletes competing in 35 sports.

On the first day of the Games, Kazakhstan won four gold medals. Cyclists Rinata Sultanova and Alexey Lutsenko, as well as karatekas Zholaman Bigabyl and Sofya Berultseva, became champions. MMA fighter Yerkingali Burkutalin added the team's fifth gold the day before, and his mixed martial arts teammate Kadyrbek Shynbayev claimed the sixth. Today, Alexey Lutsenko became a two-time champion of the 2026 Asian Games.

After the third day of the Games, Kazakhstan ranked fourth in the unofficial medal standings.
