An exhibition titled "The City and Time of Pavel and Dmitry Shorokhov" has opened at the Kasteyev Museum in Almaty. The works of Pavel Ivanovich are familiar to every resident, even if they don't realize it. In 2026, Pavel Shorokhov will turn 80. He continues to do what he loves and create in various techniques. Over a career spanning more than half a century, he has created about 95 sculptures, most of which are installed in Almaty.
He is the author of the "Camels" composition in Friendship Square behind the Kazakhstan Hotel, and the triptych "Acrobat", "Clown", and "Panther" near the Almaty Circus.
The famous flamingos on Arbat, previously standing near TSUM, are also his work. The sculpture was moved and is now located near the airport building on Zhibek Zholy Street.
Residents and guests of the city see his works at the entrance to Gorky Central Park. The animal figures of the Eastern calendar are arranged asymmetrically: one place is empty.
An attentive viewer will understand that the mouse that should have been in that place has actually "climbed" onto the camel in the center of the composition. The sculpture "Childhood" near the former cafe "Karlygash" outlived the establishment itself.
Among the latest large-scale projects is the "Park of Tales of the Peoples of Kazakhstan", opened in 2023. On a relatively small area there are about six figures of heroes from folk tales of various nationalities of the country: Germans, Chechens, Koreans, and so on.
The exhibition also featured paintings by Pavel Ivanovich's son Dmitry Shorokhov. In addition, he creates artistic photographs of his father's sculptures, which were also on display.
