Seismologists have dismissed rumors of a major earthquake in Kazakhstan that have been spreading on social media and messaging apps, according to infohub.kz.
The Almaty city administration explained that no anomalous changes in seismic activity have been recorded that would indicate impending strong tremors. "Modern science cannot precisely determine the date, time, location, or magnitude of future earthquakes. However, advance preparation remains an important safety measure: preparing an emergency kit, identifying safe spots indoors, and discussing action plans with family members," the National Scientific Center for Seismological Observations and Research of the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
In Almaty, the implementation of an automated early warning system for strong earthquakes continues. Coordinates for all 40 installation points have been identified, and 35 seismic stations have been built. The installation sites were selected based on geological, geophysical, and seismic conditions. Land plots for permanent use are being allocated. The new stations are planned to be integrated with the existing seismic monitoring network, expanding coverage and improving data timeliness.
Additionally, since 2025, installation of 70 automated early earthquake detection stations has been underway. Currently, 65 stations have been built around Almaty in the Almaty region, and the remaining five are expected to be completed by the end of this year. After integration with the 28 existing stations of the automated early warning system, they will enable faster public notification.
The city is also implementing a three-year project to study the seismogeodynamic state of the Almaty agglomeration. As part of this, a digital map of tectonic faults, a seismicity model, and a map of geodynamic activity zones are being developed, and ground surface displacements and deformations are being assessed.
An action plan to improve the seismic resistance of residential buildings and social facilities in Almaty for 2026–2035 has been approved, prepared based on building certification conducted in 2023–2024.
