A resident of Semey who spent two decades trying to build a relationship with the same woman has been punished for trying to keep her with threats and beatings — a court sentenced him to 100 hours of community service, infohub.kz reports.

According to the Department of the Penal Enforcement System for the Abai Region, the 42-year-old man lived with his partner, with whom he was raising their one-year-old son. One day a conflict broke out between them: while discussing their relationship, the woman suggested they live apart, but the man refused. To keep her, he began threatening his partner and struck her in the face several times, causing minor bodily harm.

The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to 100 hours of community service. The convicted man was registered with the probation service of the Auezov district of Semey. During registration, officers held a preventive and explanatory talk with him, explained the procedure for serving the sentence and his duties, and warned him of liability for evading it.

The convicted man himself said he had met the woman 20 years ago through mutual acquaintances. According to him, he always wanted to start a family with her, but the relationship was difficult: he was often jealous and afraid she would leave, which led to constant quarrels. The woman later married another man, and they had a son. When the man learned they had separated, he began courting her again, and a year ago they had a son together.

“I hoped we could build a strong family, but she never agreed to officially register our relationship. When, after another quarrel, she said she would leave me again, I got scared and decided that threats would keep her by my side. But my actions only made things worse and may have finally destroyed our relationship. I deeply regret what happened. All these years I wanted to be with her only, but because of my difficult character, constant jealousy and fear of losing her, I ruined everything myself,” the convicted man said.
