A 45-year-old man in Semey who promised citizens assistance "through connections" has been convicted of repeated large-scale fraud and sentenced to four years in prison, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the official Telegram channel of the Abai Region Police Department, the guilty verdict was handed down by the Semey Interdistrict Criminal Court.
"It was established that in 2020-2022, the 45-year-old man, abusing citizens' trust, took possession of their funds under various pretexts," the Abai Region Police Department said.
He told one of the victims that he had acquaintances who could help purchase an apartment at a favorable price under government programs. After receiving money from her, he never intended to fulfill his promises.
Later, under the pretext of buying a car for resale, purchasing construction materials, and resolving other issues, he again received funds from the victim. The total damage caused to her amounted to 9 million 820 thousand tenge.
He told another victim that he had connections and opportunities to help purchase real estate at a reduced price, obtain disability status, and get on the waiting list for housing under a government program. Under these pretexts, he received funds totaling 5 million 280 thousand tenge.
The Semey resident's guilt was confirmed by a body of evidence examined in court, including testimony from victims and witnesses, bank transfers, and statements.
The court sentenced him to 4 years in prison.
In addition, the court ordered him to pay material damages to the victims in the amounts of 9 million 820 thousand and 5 million 130 thousand tenge, respectively (a total of 14 million 950 thousand tenge).
The verdict also ordered the convicted man to pay a compulsory payment to the Victims' Compensation Fund of 20 MCI — 61,260 tenge.
