Colombian singer Shakira made a surprise visit to the earthquake-devastated province of Chocó and announced the reconstruction of ten schools, reports infohub.kz.
The artist visited the city of Quibdó, where she inspected destroyed educational facilities, spoke with students, and expressed concern that children are left without access to education.
As a reminder, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10. At least 287 people died in the disaster. The epicenter was in the province of Chocó, where about 40 schools completely collapsed and over three thousand residential buildings were destroyed.
The humanitarian initiative is being implemented by the singer's charity fund, Fundación Pies Descalzos, together with American philanthropist Howard Buffett, who heads a partner foundation. The organizations have committed to fully restore ten educational institutions in the region.
Shakira emphasized that her organization has been helping the educational sector in Chocó for 22 years and expressed hope that children will soon return to normal schooling.
