A court in the Akmola Region has handed down a verdict in a high-profile case involving grievous bodily harm that led to the death of the victim. The Burabay District Court heard the criminal case against a resident of Shchuchinsk charged under Part 3 of Article 106 of the Criminal Code, the website infohub.kz reports.
According to the official Telegram channel of the Akmola Region courts, the defendant and the victim had been colleagues since 2024 and were in a close relationship, dating each other. Conflicts arose between them out of jealousy: the couple would break up, then reconcile and continue their relationship.
In June 2026, the man and the woman met at the defendant's apartment to sort out their relationship and drank alcohol. During a conflict fueled by jealousy, the man punched the woman in the face and body. From the injuries she sustained, the victim began to lose consciousness, after which the defendant called an ambulance.
The woman was taken to hospital, where she died without regaining consciousness. According to the forensic examination, the cause of death was hemorrhagic shock and internal bleeding resulting from a ruptured liver. The examination found injuries including abdominal and chest trauma, hemorrhage, a ruptured liver, a fractured rib, bruises, contusions and abrasions, which caused grievous, moderate and minor harm to health.
The man's guilt was confirmed by his testimony, witness statements, an inspection of the scene, expert findings and other case materials.
The court sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The victim's civil claim for material damages and moral harm was partially granted: the convicted man was ordered to pay 12 million tenge in compensation for moral harm, along with material damages and legal representation costs totaling 2 million tenge. The ruling has not yet entered into legal force.
Recall that the tragedy occurred in Shchuchinsk in June of this year. It later emerged that 36-year-old Asem Shabelskaya had died. Her relatives shared details of the woman's relationship with the man suspected of causing her death.
