For the first time, Shymkent has performed the freezing of a malignant kidney tumor: surgeons and radiologists from CIS and Asian countries gathered in the city to exchange advanced methods of cancer treatment. The main event of the international master class was the city's first cryoablation procedure, reports infohub.kz.
Doctors successfully destroyed the kidney tumor using extremely low temperatures.
The master class was attended by leading oncologists from the N. N. Petrov National Medical Research Center of Oncology in St. Petersburg, the Japan-Mongolia University Clinic in Ulaanbaatar, interventional radiologists from Seoul, as well as surgeons from leading cancer centers in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
In addition, oncologists from France and Australia joined the master class online.
As for the procedure itself, according to oncologists, it is a minimally invasive method in which tumor tissue is destroyed by exposure to low temperatures. In addition, eight patients received treatment using modern minimally invasive technologies.
How cryoablation is performed
During the operation, a cryoprobe or cryoballoon is inserted into the affected area through a puncture or thin catheter. A cooling substance, such as liquid nitrogen, is supplied through it. After that, the temperature in the tissue drops to -80 °C and below, causing pathogenic cells to die.
A protective scar forms at the freezing site, which blocks the conduction of abnormal impulses or stops tumor growth.
In total, within the framework of the meeting, foreign and local specialists will perform 15 complex minimally invasive operations.
