In a medieval church in the German town of Halberstadt, another chord change has taken place in a performance of composer John Cage's piece designed to last 639 years, reports infohub.kz.
A new note sounded in St. Burchardi Church as part of the musical project ASLSP (As Slow as Possible). The work by the American avant-garde composer John Cage began in 2001 on a specially constructed organ and is scheduled to conclude in 2640.
The chord change attracts fans of contemporary music from around the world. To alter the chord, musicians and engineers manually add or remove sandbags, press organ pedals, or change pipes. The instrument's sound had remained unchanged since February 2024, when the previous note was set.
The project's organizers expect the piece to play continuously for over six centuries, making each chord change a rare cultural event. The next change in the organ's harmony in Halberstadt will occur in 2028.
