A destructive storm named Adam has battered eastern Spain, killing at least four people and forcing about 2,000 to evacuate as torrential rains triggered severe flooding, infohub.kz reports.
The storm hit parts of Valencia, Alicante and Catalonia. Residents were trapped in their homes, roads were submerged and rail services were disrupted.
Three deaths were recorded in the Valencia region. On Monday, members of Spain's military emergency unit found the body of a 79-year-old woman with limited mobility in her home in Oliva. A 64-year-old man staying at a campsite in the same town died of cardiac arrest. The third victim was a woman who entered the sea during the storm in Sagunto on Saturday.
In Catalonia, a 35-year-old woman from Malgrat de Mar was swept away by floodwaters on Saturday. Her body was found on Sunday about 6 km from where she disappeared.
On Monday morning, Valencia's regional government initially ordered residents of 145 municipalities home to more than 850,000 people to stay indoors as flooding worsened. However, authorities lifted the restrictions across most of the region on Monday afternoon and in all areas by Monday evening.
Spain's state meteorological agency issued a special warning for very heavy and persistent rain and thunderstorms in the Levante region and parts of the Balearic Islands.
The combination of the DANA Adam cyclone, isolated from the general atmospheric circulation, with a very humid easterly flow will bring heavy rainfall to four provinces (southern Valencia, Alicante, the Murcia region and the Almería coast) and three Balearic Islands, with a particular impact on the Pitiusas islands (Ibiza and Formentera). Significant rainfall is also forecast for Mallorca.
